The local tamarind suppliers in Indonesia are currently experiencing competition from imported Thai tamarind. These imported tamarinds are bigger, stronger in taste, and also comes with attractive packaging. On the contrary, domestic tamarind is still small and the taste is not as strong. As of now, modern middle-class and upper-class buyers in Indonesia are buying the imported tamarind, and thus, the domestic tamarind has lost an estimated 20% of its market share.
