Chinese garlic has 30% of market share in Thailand despite the high import tax

Thai garlic market in Thailand is worth about 320 million USD. About 223 million USD is Thai garlic and the remaining is imported; mainly from China. According to the official imported garlic figures, the Thai government knows that there is much of Chinese garlic smuggled in and sold at very cheap prices. Thailand has been collected the import tax for garlic at 27% for the quota of 60-70 metric tons/year and 57% outside the quota. Even then, Chinese garlic is still cheaper than Thai garlic.
