Many catfish breeders have stopped their business due to catastrophic declines due to non-competitive prices in the market. Livestock breeders are turning to eel breeding as it has great potential in the world market due to the high demand for food, medicines, and cosmetics in some countries such as Korea and Japan. Typically, eels sold in the local market are wild eels caught in swamp, field, or muddy environments but that number is still insufficient to meet the market needs especially in restaurants where the animal is the main dish. This has led to more farmers starting their eel business due to local and overseas demand.
