Local farmers in Papua province are currently trying to diversify the variety of banana that are grown in the region by planting a local variety called musa ingens banana. This variety is a very distinctive due to its ability to grow in the higher ground with a colder climate, the fact that its banana trees can grow taller than most local varieties, and can be harvested up to twice a year. Aside from its fruits, the branches that are usually wasted from the production can also be sold by the farmers as it is traditionally used in this province as vegetables. Despite the low demand for this variety, and the fact that this variety is relatively less known to the national consumers, planting this variety is still profitable by the local farmers as this variety requires less effort and cost to be produced and can still be marketed locally as well as to the consumers in Papua New Guinea that are directly bordered with this province.
