In February 2020, Costa Rica sent its first shipment of pork meat to China, becoming the first Central American country to export this product to the Asian giant. This happened after long negotiations that started in 2013, and the establishment of a sanitary protocol signed between the two countries in which producers have to go through a strict registration and approval process by local National Service of Animal Health (SENASA). Costa Rica and China also have an FTA, which opens a lot of potential for Costa Rican exporters.
