Bulgarian garlic growers complain about the fact that government subsidies provided to growers are insufficient to compete against imported garlic.
The Bulgarian government subsidizes the growers with €50 per hectare but growers need to have sold the products to receive the support and according to growers the biggest problem lies here. The Bulgarian garlic doesn't get sold at the wholesale market due to the higher price compared to the garlic imported from Spain. The Spanish garlic is sold at €1,80 per kg while the Bulgarian garlic is sold at around €2,55 per kg.
Another aspect Bulgarian garlic growers complain is that their Romanian counterparts also receive subsidies from their government around €300 per hectare and it's seen as insufficient by Romanian farmers. Bulgarian growers argue that the support frame should be enhanced and domestic farmers should be made price competitive.
