The annualized 2020 sum of the three types of meat (beef, pork, and chicken) was just above 100 kilos per inhabitant/year. This would mean about 10% less than the 110 kilos measured in 2019.
Chicken: If the data for the first five months of 2020 is compared with that for the same period of 2019, it is the only meat that improved its performance, since apparent consumption increased 1.7%. As production had grown more (2.9%), exports were the ones that absorbed the excess supply, since they grew almost 8%.
In the case of pork, meanwhile, production in these five months fell by 2.6%, but consumption fell further, by 7.2%. Also here a striking growth in exports (40%) allowed the surplus to be channeled.
Beef remains the most consumed meat, although chicken is approaching threateningly towards that throne. Here consumption fell 3.5% so far this year, while production grew 2.5%. This leftover meat allowed exports to add about 50 K tons more than in the previous cycle, with an increase of 18%.
