Brazilian papaya is currently being traded at USD 1,000/ton on FCA Rio de Janeiro airport basis. The fruit ripens very quickly, in very few days. Unfortunately, the controlled atmosphere has not been an option for container shipping according to Brazilian exporters. They would rather limiting their potential of business via air instead of taking the risk of the ripening on long sea routes. The cost of the air freight usually comes at a higher value than the fruit itself.
