After a steady increase over the last 3 weeks, the GB all-prime average deadweight cattle price reached USD 532.60 per kg for the week ending 5 March. According to the Agricultural and Horticultural Board analysis this price level is about the same as it was at the beginning of the year, however this is still USD 75.45 more than the 5-year average.
Prices increased for all categories if compared to the 5-year averages with steers, young bulls and heifers up USD 1.43, USD 2.74 and USD 3.52 respectively. The most increase was seen for cull cow prices, which for the first time went above USD 390.94 per kg. At USD 403.59 per kg, this was a USD 14.60 increase comparing to the previous week and 19% on the same period last year. This is explained by larger quantities requested by the processors that want to increase their inventories to be ready to meet higher demand during summer time, in context of globally rising beef trim prices.
