In Colombia, potato is a crop that occupies less than 5% of the planted area and represents less than 4% of the national agricultural production. Although it is an essential ingredient for traditional cooking, as a result of COVID-19, domestic demand has plummeted (the closing of hotels and restaurants that accounted for around 30% of the tuber’s purchases had a great impact) while household consumption of potatoes has also fallen (job losses translated into a lower purchasing power of the consumer).
