In 2023, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported a 3% year-on-year (YoY) decline in Philippine banana exports, reaching 2.206 million metric tons (mmt), primarily attributed to the impact of the Banana Fusarium Wilt TR4 disease and logistical challenges. Despite the decline, the Philippines remains Asia's top banana exporter and third globally. TR4 affected around 15,000 plantations in the Philippines in 2023, raising concerns for the industry's future. Additionally, quality issues affected exports to Japan. Meanwhile, global banana exports slightly increased, but production challenges and economic factors led to varied performance among key trade partners.
