Being overloaded, the Rungis market is expanding to three sites in the north of Paris. The Rungis market currently covers 234 hectares, has a turnover of EUR 9 billion, 1,200 companies, and 18 million consumers. The market is presently almost saturated. The Rungis market was created more than 50 years ago and is now over 98% occupied and has limited capacity to meet the increase in food consumption demands and the changing needs of professionals.
The Rungis market could extend to three new platforms in Val-d'Oise, north of Paris. This project is expected to cost more than EUR 1 billion, and it aims to be an extension of the Rungis market. The extension, called 'Agoralim,' will not be a replica of Rungis. Physical trade between buyers will still be reserved for the historic site. This project could start as early as 2025 and finish in 2027.
