Thailand can produce only half of the domestic demand, which amounts to 120,000 MT per year, due to the climate and limited landscape to grow garlic. Due to high import volume from China and low prices of Chinese garlic, China is one of the main garlic exporters to Thailand.
Due to high demand and local season during Jan-April, there is a big inflow of imported garlic in Thailand. However, there also exist problems regarding illegal import from China, especially when local supply is short, mostly by small vendors. Thai government is now struggling to solve these issues.
