Amid global prices for grains are rising, Germany seems less worried than others as the country is the second-largest grain producer in the European Union after France. Overall, Germany produces enough grain, especially wheat, to support itself. The only recent exception was the severe drought year of 2018 when there was a supply gap of almost ten percentage points or 4M/mt of grain. Self-sufficiency for some specific grains such as durum wheat, rye, and oats is much lower. For Durum wheat used for pasta production, it’s only 15%; with rye, the Germans cover 84%, and with oats, it’s 71%.
