Hungary's decision to limit grain exports in March 2022 puts the Italian soft wheat milling industry and livestock farming in a difficult position. Trade associations are clamoring for EU intervention after Hungary introduced a system of restrictions on grain exports to EU countries, to ensure coverage of its internal needs and limit the effects of price increases. This decision will have devastating repercussions on the Italian milling industry, which will no longer be able to guarantee the production of soft wheat flour in the volumes required by the market as Italy imports nearly 30% of its soft wheat needs from Hungary.
