Hurricane Ian hit Florida's southwest coast on Wednesday afternoon, W39, and along its path was Polk County, the top citrus-producing county in 2021–22. Due to the storm, citrus trees were uprooted and are resting along fences as the water surge decreases. Based on previous hurricanes, Florida's citrus farmers are assuming fruits will be bloated, spongy, and unstable enough for the fresh market due to the high water levels. In the 2021-22 season, Florida's citrus production was led by Polk County at 7.78M boxes, followed by DeSoto at 6.8M boxes, Highlands at 6.65M boxes, Hendry at 5.52M boxes, and Hardee at 4.75M boxes, which altogether accounts for over 70% of the state's total production.
