The mangrove forest in Cilicap regency in the West Java province is now being used by a number of local fishermen in the area to implement a production method called polyculture biofilter in the farming of shrimp and milkfish. This method combines two species with two different characteristics in one floating cage, and the mangrove forest is utilized to create a natural-like environment for both species. In terms of the commodity, shrimp and milkfish were chosen to be farmed in the same cage as these two commodities have a different living pattern where shrimp tend to stay in the bottom of the cage, whereas milkfish tend to stay close to the surface of the cage so that these two commodities can coexist without problem. This method is expected to allow the fishermen to diversify products while keeping the production cost-efficient.
