Maize Prices in Kenya Increased 20% MoM in March Due to Low Domestic Supply and Delayed Imports

Kenya's maize prices have been increasing due to low domestic supply from farmers and delayed imports by the government due to scarcity in the global market. This import delay has seen farmers and suppliers hoard maize, in the hopes that prices will increase. In February, the price of 90kg of maize stood at USD 39.37, which increased by 20% to USD 47.24 in the first week of March. Millers have also increased the price of a bale (24kg) of maize flour by 10%, from USD 16.14 in February to USD 17.72 in March. Furthermore, the shortage has seen retail prices for 2kg maize flour rise by 5.6%.
