The Ministry of Consumer Affairs says that India has emerged as the world’s largest producer and consumer of sugar and as the second-largest exporter. In the sugar season from October-September 2021-22, a record over 500MMT of sugarcane was produced in India, of which about 357MMT was crushed by sugar mills to produce about 39.4MMT of sugar (sucrose). Of this, 3.5MMT was used for ethanol production, and 35.9MMT was produced by sugar mills. The season has proven to be a watershed for the Indian sugar sector.
