The government of Kenya has issued a notice that allows the import of duty-free maize into the country over the next six months, which will be until April or May 2023. This is to enable the country to meet the high demand for maize in Kenya due to the prolonged drought experienced in 2022 which decreased domestic production. The government has also allowed the importation of GMO (genetically modified organism) maize, which was previously banned in the country. Imports are expected from countries such as Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa. In W46, the retail price of dry maize stood at USD 0.5/kg.
