Mate herb was consumed by the 'Guarani' and 'Tupi' people. It is considered to be the national beverage of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. It is also widely consumed in some areas of Brazil. Bolivia and Chile. The largest importers of such herb are Syria and Lebanon, where it was introduced by immigrants.
Argentina (60%) is the largest producer of mate herb, followed by Brazil (35%) and Paraguay (5%), while Uruguay is the largest consumer per capita.
