Yellow Mango Cultivation Area Decreases in Thailand

Since the last two years after the COVID-19 outbreak, Nam Dok Mai(yellow mango) growers in Northern Thailand decided to cut off more than 1,000 mango trees to cultivate durian and rambutan instead.

Rambutan was cultivated in the Northern area for more than 15 years. Also, they are rapidly growing up on the Northern side rather than on the Eastern side, which is their area of origin. With more than 59 acre in Chiang Mai province, farmers could harvest around 100 tons of Ngho Rong Rien rambutan between April till July.

For durian, it was cultivated in the Northern area 10 years ago, but its growth rate was not good for the first five years. Then, growers tried to adjust growing techniques in terms of fertilizer, planting distance, and planting area. In 2020, Mushan King durian in the Northern area was sold in the domestic market for around 15 MT from 32 acres. Its season is longer than Southern and Eastern durians, from April to October. Durian cultivating area will be expanded in 2022 like rambutan, as both have raised more income to the farmers.
