New regulations for hemp cultivation in Portugal

In view of the growing demand for hemp-based products, intended for industrial use, namely production of fiber, seeds and other products destined to the agribusiness, and also considering the high agricultural and economic potential of this crop, the Portuguese Government approved an amendment to Regulatory Decree No. 61/94, of 12 October, appointing the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary (DGAV) to intervene in the processes of authorization and control of the cultivation of hemp for its industrial use. And establishing new rules on the control of the lawful market for narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, safeguarding the legitimate interest of its cultivation and differentiating it from that intended for medicinal purposes, at the same time that it aims to avoid illicit activities, namely the trafficking of psychotropic substances.
