The 2022/23 Portuguese kiwifruit campaign produced 30% less quantity due to the drought observed last year as well as the higher-than-average temperatures recorded during the winter time from Jan-March 2022. The kiwifruit culture requires cold winters with between 700-900 hours of cold (temperatures below 7°C), depending on the varieties, to break plant dormancy. The lower yield can be considered the main reason why prices are higher.

Apart from that, wholesalers and certain producers from Asturias, Spain, are willing to offer Portuguese growers prices up to USD 1.07/kg for kiwis that are still in the orchards, compared to USD 0.48-0.54/kg offered for Greek kiwis. The reason is mainly that Asturia is close to the North of Portugal, where Kiwis are grown, and wholesalers want to secure Portuguese kiwis because of their high quality in terms of Brix and acidity as well as the fact that logistics are relatively simple
