The perennial issue of translucency in Philippine Pineapples occurred again during week 12. This is the result of the long wet season in areas where Pineapples are grown. Translucency is a physiological disorder of the pineapple flesh. The affected flesh has low porosity and a water-soaked appearance, due to the inter-cellular free spaces being filled with liquid (Sideris and Krauss, 1933). With this kind of defect, the de-greened pineapples are harvested with low color to minimize loss. Low color is favorable for ME markets; the Japanese & Korean market requires a higher color stage at harvest.
