Red Tide damaged Japanese fishery industry in the east of Hokkaido

A red tide caused the death of sea urchin and salmon causing approximately JPY 76 billion loss. This occured in this summer due to plankton, killing almost all sea urchins and drowning salmon as their gills become blocked. It has been reported that the negative impact of harmful plankton on the industry will continue in 2022.
