There is an increase in the demand for smaller size Indian onions from South-East Asia, which is helping and compensating for the decreased demand from West Asia (one of the main markets for Indian onions) due to high freight rates. There has been a notable surge in demand for small onions (of 25-35 mm diameter size) in countries like Malaysia and Thailand.
Besides this, the demand is also good for Indian sambhar onions (shallots) from these countries due to the shortage of shallots supplies from Bangkok, which is the main supplier to Southeast Asian countries.
