The South African poultry association has raised concerns about the import of chicken into the country. The increase of cheaper imported chicken would affect local production and pricing. A further concern is that most consignments were labeled as chicken feet, and not leg-quarters, to avoid higher import tariffs. Chicken feet have a tariff rate of 30% while leg-quarters are at 60%. Thus, leg-quarters were imported at a cheaper price than domestic products.
