Tanzania will introduce a cold supply chain transportation solution for fresh fruits and vegetables via railway to reduce post-harvest losses of up to 40% of annual harvests. The wagons will have refrigerators/cold room facilities so crops such as tomatoes or mangoes are not damaged before they arrive in the market or export facilities. The project is expected to start in Kilosa, Gulwe, and Mpwapwa, the loading point, and be transported to Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's horticultural earnings were USD 779M in 2021, and the government intends to increase export value to USD 3B by 2030.
