In preparation for purchasing consumer goods for the Chinese New Year 2022, it may result in a higher price of longan due to shipping delays during the holiday season.
China is the largest importer of longan from Thailand, shipped along the Mae Khong river by ocean freight. Goods will transit through the Mae Sai customs checkpoint in Chiang Rai Province. It will dock at a shipping port in Kyaukphyu township in Rakhine State, Myanmar, adjacent to Ruili city in Yunnan, closed for any shipments due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In the middle of November 2021 Chinese government is likely to open trade through this checkpoint in preparation for the Chinese New Year festival of 2022 on February 1.
The price increase of Thai longan is not just for selling to China only but also affects other export markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and countries with Chinese communities.
Currently, the price of Thai longan in the wholesale market is as below;
-Gold USD 0.91 per kg.
-Red USD 0.82per kg.
-Green USD 0.52 per kg.
-Blue USD 0.67per kg.

The price increase is expected up to 10-15% of the current price.
