Beyond the dramatic human consequences, the Russian-Ukrainian war will have major economic impacts for the agricultural sector. French producers of field crops call to reaffirm a strategy of growth in agricultural production. Ukraine represents 110 million MT of field crop production, of which 90 million MT are destined for export. Russia and Ukraine together represent 30% of the world cereal trade. Faced with this situation, the AGPB, AGPM, CGB, FOP and UNPT wish to affirm that any risk of shortage is excluded for the food of the French and Europeans. However, field crop producers are hard hit by the economic instability of this conflict, as are the livestock sectors. In the short term, there is a real risk of an explosion in production costs, input prices (especially fertilizers) and energy costs.
For all these reasons, it is urgent to reexamine collective choices at the French and European levels to give farmers the ability to produce. Increased production in the field crop sector is also a response to the needs of the livestock sector, which will also be hit by the rise in raw material prices. Field crop producers have been working for several years to develop their production while meeting the expectations of citizen-consumers in terms of climate and biodiversity. Public financial support for innovation must be continued to accelerate the development of new solutions, for example through new plant breeding techniques. French field crop producers, aware of their responsibility, are ready to produce to meet all these challenges.
