In the span of January to October 2020, the export volume of salak fruit from Indonesia has reportedly decreased by close to 30%, in comparison to the export volume during the same period last year. Some exporters mentioned that one major contributing factor for this negative trend is the slowing down of demand for this fruit from the regular importer countries such as China and Thailand, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. As a reference, a number of exporters in Central Java province mentioned that before the pandemic, they could export around 20 MT of salak fruit on a monthly basis during the peak season, whereas now they can only receive half that order quantity in a month.
