The Marine Stewardship Council is an independent non-profit organization that sets standards for sustainable wild-caught fishing practices. Fisheries need to pass a rigorous certification process, and then sustainably sourced seafood is recognized by the MSC blue eco-label. Many large supermarkets and wholesale buyers will use the MSC chain of custody to trace their seafood products from the fishery's source to the customer’s plate. Across the UK, 82% of seafood consumers believe buying seafood with an MSC eco-label is an excellent and easy way to protect the oceans from overfishing. There are currently over 1,600 MSC consumer-labeled products found in the UK.
