The Turkish Kabuli chickpea harvest is in full swing backed by strong market demand. Due to favourable climatic conditions and rains, the quality of the 2022/23 crop is much better than last year. About 50% of the crop is 8 and 9 mm with the majority of the remaining volumes being 7 mm with small volumes of 6 mm and 10 mm. Turkey exported 60,000MT of Kabuli chickpeas in 2021/22, with a similar volume expected in 2022/23 as the government eased chickpea export restrictions initially imposed in March 2022.
Turkey’s chickpea harvest started in early July with the demand picking up in winter and peaking before Ramadan. This year, because Ramadan begins at the end of March, the export of chickpeas is expected to peak in January and February. The main markets for Turkish chickpeas are in Europe and the Middle Eastern countries.
