The Kenyan government is planning to build an exclusive cargo airport in Athi River. This is aimed at boosting Kenya Airways' capacity to transport horticultural products such as vegetables, avocados, and flowers from Kenya to different export destinations. According to a report by the Airports Council International, JKIA handled 363,204MT of cargo in 2021, and out of this, Kenya Airways only transported 10% of the total cargo.
