World cashew nut production in 2020 was 3,600,000 kilos of nuts, India is the world's largest producer with approximately 22% of production. The global demand for cashew nuts has grown by more than 7% per year, while production is growing at a rate of 6% per year, which makes this crop an interesting projection in Colombia.
In Colombia, there are approximately 5,600 hectares of this crop with an annual production of 4,400 tons per year, 60% of this area cultivated in cashew, has average yields of less than 100 kg per hectare of nut, a yield considered low by world standards, compared to 1,000 kg per hectare or even more in producing countries. Colombia's goal is to become one of the top cashew nut producing countries, alongside India, Ivoire coast, Ghana and Vietnam.
