Whole round barramundi export in Taiwan drops 29% in 2020

Barramundi is the second largest export farmed fish in Taiwan in terms of dollar value. In 2020, Taiwan exported 25.5 Million USD (3,589 MT) of barramundi fillet, a yoy decrease of 29% and 26% respectively. The major destination of barramundi fillet is Australia, with more than 85% of fillets going to the Australian market.

As for wholeround barramundi, Taiwan exported 1.03 Million USD (259 MT) in 2020, a yoy decrease of -36% and -28% respectively. The major destination for wholeround barramundi is the USA, which is direct competition with relatively affordable fish, tilapia. The year of year increase of wholeround tilapia to USA has a growth rate of 11%, while wholeround barramundi has a drastic decrease of -42%. The consumer is favoring affordable fish during the pandemic.
