Drought is starting to threaten more and more cereal crops in Europe. The problem is increasingly affecting Romania, Bulgaria, the Baltic countries, and soon perhaps also Poland. Soil moisture levels were lower than the levels of the last two seasons and long-term averages at the end of April in Romania's wheat-producing regions in the south and south-east, according to Argusmedia. On the other hand, rainfall, if it did occur, was local and so intense that it worsened the condition of crops rather than improved it. The situation is different in irrigated areas, where very good yields are expected. The Baltic countries are beginning to suffer from rainfall shortages; in Lithuania, soil moisture has been below average since mid-April, and the situation is even worse in Latvia, where there is direct talk of drought.
