As the world's second largest exporter of wheat, the European Union does not need imports, but thanks to solidarity measures, it received a surprising amount of wheat from war-torn Ukraine last year. According to the Commission's data, 8.23 million tons of bread grain arrived in the community until May 27, almost three and a half times more than last year. Barley imports reached 1.91 million tons, which is more than twice the amount of last year. The import of corn increased by 61% by the end of May, reaching 24.34 million tons, which means a surplus of more than 9 million tons.
