The French health authorities explain that since March 14 the national situation regarding highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was considered healthy. In fact, compared to last year, the south-eastern Nouvelle-Aquitaine region has registered 28 outbreaks between October 1, 2022 and March 14, 2023, compared to 361 in the same period in 2021-2022. However, since May 4, more than 20 outbreaks have been identified on farms, mainly ducks. Most have been recorded in the Gers department, but they have also occurred in Landes, both in the south-west of the country. France affirms that, from the first outbreak, the State services mobilized to implement regulatory measures for health management. In these cases, a 3 km protection zone has been established around each farm declared a focus, complemented by a surveillance zone that covers a 10 km radius.
