The number of beef cattle in Canada in 2022 decreased by 230 thousand heads or 2.4%. Data from Statistics Canada (StatCan) on March 1 is reported by the online publication The Western Producer. As of early 2023, calves accounted for much of the decline. As of January 1, 2022, there were 6.437 million cattle on calf farms in Canada. As of January 1, 2023, this figure was 6.278 million. Calves decreased by 160 thousand heads or 2.5% over the year. The number of cattle at fattening and storage enterprises also decreased by 71 thousand heads from 1.723 million at the beginning of 2022 to 1.652 million as of January 1 of this year. The biggest decrease was in the province of Alberta from 4.816 million to 4.628 million. The number of all cattle in Canada, including dairy cattle, fell by 2.2% in 2022.
