The closure of the shrimp fishery within the San Jorge Gulf for five years, and the migratory biological behavior of the resource, in national waters, has caused the Santa Cruz port of Puerto Deseado to progressively lose incidence in landings of that species. This is reflected in the statistics and the drop in port activity, with economic, social and labor repercussions for that community. Puerto Deseado is currently the fourth largest fishing port in the country, in a ranking led by Mar del Plata, followed by Puerto Madryn and Rawson. In recent years, the pier of the city has reported squid and the jigging fleet as its main volume of movement. The official statistics of the Undersecretary of Fisheries of the Nation show "stable" numbers in the first four months of 2022, when compared to previous years.
