The US Department of Agriculture is taking measures to prevent the spread of the tomato browning and wrinkling virus (ToBRFV), which affects tomatoes and sweet peppers, due to its international reach, impacting countries such as Ukraine, Turkey, the Netherlands, Israel, Dominican Republic, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Jordan, China, and the UK. The virus, known for causing symptoms like swelling and mosaic patterns on leaves, and leading to smaller, underdeveloped fruits with necrotic spots, has no known resistant hybrids and can persist in soil and plant debris for up to two decades. Its transmission can occur through contact with contaminated plants, soil, or greenhouse environments, highlighting the need for strict import regulations and precautions in agricultural practices.
