
In W18 in the barley landscape, the Sofia Commodity Exchange experts report that the end of April brought a new decrease in the quotations of the main grain commodities on the global commodity exchange markets. The price of barley fell by USD 13.14 in France to USD 253.99/MT, and in Russia dropped by USD 12 to USD 247/MT. 92% of French autumn barley received a good or excellent rating in W17, compared to 91% the previous week and 86% a year earlier. The classification of French spring barley was unchanged at 94% and exceeded the 88% registered at the same time in 2022.
According to the Ukranian Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food, in the first ten months of the 2022/23 season, from July 1st, 2022, to April 30th, 2023, Ukraine exported 41.595MMT of grains and pulses, with barley accounting for 2.461MMT, down 9.3% and 56.6%, respectively compared to the same period in the previous season when 45.869MMT were shipped, with barley totaling 5.668MMT. In April 2023, Ukrainian barley exports amounted to 185K MT, while between January and April 2023, Ukraine shipped more than 765K MT of barley. Sowing in Ukraine revived somewhat in W17 after rains, cold weather, and floods. Thus, as of the beginning of May 2nd, 2.32M ha of grain and leguminous crops were sown, with spring barley accounting for 712.1K ha.
The Russian Ministry of Agriculture reported new rates of customs duties, set to run from May 12th to May 16th, with barley export duties increasing by USD 5.27 from USD 28.32/MT to USD 34.52/MT. The USDA reports that the rains experienced in Turkey have increased moisture supplies for both winter grains and summer crops, which bodes well for the region’s agricultural industry. Therefore, growth prospects in late wheat and barley have improved considerably due to recent rains. Lastly, in Adana, one of the production centers of Turkey, the barley and wheat fields recovered with the April rains, increasing the harvest expectation of the farmers. Wheat is planted on 193K decares and barley is planted on 10K decares. Farmers are estimating that there are days left for the first harvest, with an expectation of 100K MT of harvest in the district.
