In W21 in the strawberry landscape the University of California, United States, has developed and introduced five new strawberry varieties resistant to Fusarium wilt. These varieties, named UC Eclipse, UC Golden Gate, UC Keystone, UC Monarch, and UC Surfline, have been selected to offer high yields and improved quality. Also, the Environmental Defense Fund of the United States warns that the changing climate threatens Hillsborough County's strawberry industry in Florida. Strawberry production is projected to drop by 11% by 2050 due to the impacts of climate change.
Egypt has significantly strengthened its position as a leading exporter of frozen strawberries to the Chinese market. In 2022, Egypt accounted for 80% of China's total frozen strawberry imports, surpassing Morocco, which saw its imports limited to 1.4K tonnes. In 2022, Egypt exported over 31K tonnes. Although there was a slight decline in Egyptian exports in Q1 2023, volumes remain high compared to previous years. The final results for the MY 2023 will be more evident in the early fall, as Egyptian exports typically peak between March and October.
On the other hand, in May, the prices for high-quality (tunnel) Polish strawberries stood at an average of USD 4.76/kg (PLN 20/kg). On the wholesale market of Broznie, the price increased to USD 5.47-5.95/kg (PLN 23-25/kg). The producer price of local strawberries in the Budapest wholesale market of Hungary stood at USD 7.60/kg (HUF 2,618/kg), a drop of 7% compared to the same period in 2022. In the Moldovan market, the average wholesale price of garden strawberries expects to remain stable at USD 3.38/kg. The maximum wholesale prices for the highest quality local strawberries dropped to USD 3.64/kg by mid-May. Lastly, the prices for garden strawberries in Transcarpathia, Ukraine, decreased to USD 2.17-2.71/kg (UAH 80-100/kg) at wholesale markets, and in the Khustsky district, the price of strawberries dropped from USD 3.52-4.06/kg (UAH 130-150/kg) to around USD 2.71/kg (100 UAH/kg).
