In W40 in the watermelon landscape, in Ukraine, the watermelon sales season is ending, resulting in a decreased supply of watermelons. The reduced supply and increased demand have driven watermelon prices upwards ranging from USD 0.33 to 0.49 per kilogram (UAH 12 to UAH 18/kg). The shift in watermelon sales highlights the seasonality and fluctuations within the fruit and vegetable market, impacting supply and pricing dynamics.

Furthermore, watermelon cultivation in Ukraine is making a significant comeback, with a unique shift towards new regions and inexperienced farmers. Areas not traditionally associated with watermelon cultivation, such as western and central Ukraine, have begun participating in watermelon production. The restoration of watermelon cultivation is seen as a response to challenges caused by conflict and occupation in the region.

Kherson, a region that historically contributed significantly to watermelon production, was unable to participate in the market last year due to occupation and landmines. However, in 2023, efforts to restart production have led to increased supply, with reports of 300 tons of watermelons already harvested in the Kherson region. In 2022, watermelon production in Ukraine had declined by half, resulting in an output of 204.5 thousand tons, with the Poltava region being a primary contributor, producing 36.7 thousand tons. The import of watermelons in 2022 notably increased, amounting to 33.4 thousand tons, marking a 3.2-fold growth compared to 2021. This import surge, the highest in six years, was mainly sourced from Turkey and Romania.

The year 2023 is expected to witness more extensive watermelon production in Ukraine. Many farmers across Ukraine have expanded their cultivation areas, with some increasing significantly. This expansion is evident in the pricing, as watermelon prices have decreased compared to last year, reflecting the increased supply and broader production scope.
