In W22 in the pear landscape, the Belgian Fruit Auction (BFV) is experiencing a high demand for organic pears due to climatic problems in France and Italy. BFV explains that the high demand does not cause the specialist to fear high prices and shortages at the start of the new season. In 2022, they were able to offer sorted pears for USD 1.82-1.92 (EUR 1.70-1.80), but parties requesting USD 2.14 (EUR 2) did succeed in getting it. Fortunately, they have a committed customer and can support one another during trying times. In Germany, a dedicated supplier at the Munich wholesale market, ensures a year-round supply of pears that are grown in-house. The upcoming season for Italian produce is scheduled to commence in late August 2023 or early September 2023. The price is at a medium level, taking into account transportation costs. The primary purchasers of these pears include food retailers and weekly markets, while occasional catering customers frequent Cavalleri Ettore's stand at the Munich wholesale market. The pears are marketed in wooden crates of 12-24/crate, with the Abate and Williams varieties available. At the start of the season, they also offer the Carmen, Santa Maria, and Kaiser Alexander varieties.
Lastly, South Africa's apple and pear industry association and Joy Wing Mau Fruit Technologies Group collaborated to launch the 2023 South African apple and pear season in Guangzhou. South African pears are showing potential in China, with 13.7K cartons or 1,711mt arriving in China. Of this total volume, 985mt, or over 57% were Forelle pears, followed by Cheeky and Packham’s Triumph. The estimated export volumes for this season were reduced due to the hailstorm, reducing the export volume of Fuji apples by 12% and the overall export volume by 10%. This limited supply is expected to strengthen the demand for Fuji apples on the market.
