Spot Banana Price Increase in Ecuador in W50 (Dec 19)
In Ecuador, spot banana prices showed an increase during W50, from USD 8.9/13.5 kg box and USD 11/18.14 kg box in W49 to USD 11.10/13.5 kg box and 13.95/18.14 kg box in W50, all FOB. The increase is due to increased demand from multinational companies that buy from Ecuador due to lower supply in Central America. The Russian demand has started to increase, and higher spot prices are forecasted for W51.
Ecuador Exported 22.24 M Less Boxes of Bananas (Dec 23)
Ecuador has seen a decrease of 6.42% in banana exports from January to November 2022, representing 22.24M boxes less, compared to the same period in 2021. Exports to Africa fell by 36.11%, to the US by 13.32%, and to Oceania by 11.73%. The Russian war in Ukraine and the cold weather were some of the main factors contributing to the lower volumes.
Colombia
In Colombia, banana exporters report heavy rains in late 2022 will cause yield issues for harvests in 2023. The forecast is a 5-10% decrease in production. The export trend in Colombia for 2023 will be oriented to the United States, where bananas are the most preferred fruit, and demand remains strong compared to the European market with low market and growth.
China
Chinese Average Purchase Price of Bananas as of December 13, 2022 (Dec 20)
As of December 13, 2022, the Chinese average price of bananas increased by 0.14% to USD 0.49/kg. The purchase price of each major banana-producing province is as follows:
Guangdong banana: USD 0.43/kg;
Guangxi banana: USD 0.59/kg;
Yunnan banana: USD 0.49/kg;
Fujian banana: USD 0.44/kg.
Poland
The FOT Spot Price of Green Banana in Poland in W50 Increased as a Result of High Demand (Dec 22)
FOT spot prices for green bananas in the Polish market increased in W50 compared to W48. The price of brand-name bananas reached USD 22.89/18kg, and the lowest offers did not fall below USD 21.55/18 kg compared to the price in W48, which stood at USD 21.32 - 22.39/18kg. The price increase was mainly due to the rise in demand a week before Christmas.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Prices in the Polish Wholesale Market in W50 (Dec 22)
In W50, banana prices have risen even more in the Polish market given the lack of supply in Europe and the upcoming Christmas. Mandarin and lemon prices have stabilized, while tomato prices have dropped significantly. Overall, there are conflicting opinions regarding sales volume and stock rotation. While some wholesalers believe that W50 is a good sales week, others believe that sales are not as strong as they should be for the Christmas season.
