In 2022, North Rhine-Westphalian (NRW) vegetable farmers cultivated 28,700 hectares of vegetables, which is the size of Dortmund, and saw a consumer price increase of 13.6% for vegetables. The sales value of fruit and vegetable products in NRW rose by 6.0% to 2.8 billion euros, with carrots being the most cultivated vegetable and asparagus the second most. Nationwide, the sales value of fruit and vegetable products increased by 9.3% to 8.8 billion euros, with 31.3% of this coming from NRW. However, consumer prices for lettuce and iceberg lettuce fell by 20.3% in May 2023 compared to the same month in 2022.
