UAE wishes to reduce dependency on imports for food products

UAE relies heavily on imports with the country's food needs. 90% of the food product is imported. The country is now targeting towards creating self-sufficient and sustainable farming techniques to significantly decrease the dependency on food imports. The country plans to start with rice, wheat, and coffee beans as a part of the self-sufficiency plan. An Emirati farmer has already tested an irrigation system with desalinated water using a network of an underground system that gave a production yield of 763 kg per 1,000 m².
